  1. Go to the Front view panel.
  2. Create a new nurbTorus and make sure the interactive creation is turned off.
  3. When the options box pops out, change the Surface Degree from Cubic to Linear then click Create.
  4. Now you have to create the handle. To do that, create a Polygon primitive cylinder.
  5. The radius should be .4 and the height should be around 5 or 5.5. Subdivisions Axis: 20. Subdivisions Height:8 Subdivisions Caps:1
  6. Rotate the Cylinder 90 degrees on the Z-axis.
  7. Use the Move tool to move the cylinder towards the Torus and make it fit into the torus so it is centered. You can use the top view to make sure the figures are centered. You can also change the setting so you can see the shading by clicking the solid blue cube and the wire frame cube.
  8.  To create the knife edge you will have to create a pyramid. To do that turn on interactive creation and make a pyramid with a square base that is about as tall as the cylinder.
  9. Use the scale tool to squash the base of the pyramid to make it look more like a knife blade.
  10. Rotate the pyramid 90 degrees along the Z axis then use the Move Tool to slide it into place.
  11. You can add shading effects to change the color of the objects or leave it as is.

My Experience

I liked this project because it let us do whatever we wanted instead of having to be told what to do every step of the way. I didn't like this project because I couldn't make what I originaly wanted to because it is very hard to draw things on Maya. I don't like that you have to use the shapes and you can't manipulate them easily, like you can't curve the sides of the rectangle or change the thickness to go from thick on one side to thin on the other side. I really want to do this again at the end of the semester when we can all use Maya better so I can see what I can make then.
This is what I finished with. It was easier because the geometric shapes were easier to create and piece together.

Questions

Template Display

1. When do you use template display?

when you need to work on something specifically and you dont want the other objects in your way.

2. What does templating the display allow you to do?

select and focus on specific objects while the rest turn a greyish color.

3. How does the object change when you template the display?

the wire frame becomes gray and not easily selected

4. How does the template display help you?

It helps prevent changing the wrong object

5. How do you change the display of objects to template mode?
You select all the objects you want to template and go to Display> Object Display> Template

6. How do you untemplate a templated object?

Change your selection mode to select by hierarchy: template button. Select by template. Once templated objects are selected, from main menu, select Display> Object Display> Untemplate

7. How did you work with template display in the last lesson?

I changed all of the Temple Base to a template so I could more easily work on building the roof.

Components

1. What is a component?

Objects such as primitives we used are made of components like control vertices, faces, and hulls

2. Give three examples of a component.

Control vertices, faces, hulls

3. What does a component allow you to do in Maya?
Components allow you to edit objects at a closer level

4. What are the step to select a component of an object?
Set the selection mode to Component and click on the wire frame, then draw a marquee around the control vertices you want to edit.

5. How did you work with components in the last lesson?

We used the control vertices to edit the torus we built as part of the temple roof.

Problems Encountered

problems we had were not being able to keep everyone on track because others were having different problems. Other problems are that there were a lot of extra steps that you didn't have to do and were just a waste of time. Another problem is that some of the menus didn't pop up the same as they did on the paper so you had to figure out another way to do the same thing.

What I learned is that there is always a different way to do things if one doesn't work.
